On the 13th July Dave Phillips fought Gareth Mostyn from Master A's gym. Dave had been struggling to get matched having a 5f 5w record at 68kgs, so we accepted a fight at 72kgs against Gareth. Gareth is an experienced opponent who has alot of junior experience, then transferred to kickboxing and has just returned to Master A's. Gareth had some serious weight struggles building up to the fight as he was dropping weight and coming down from 80kgs. This was also Daves first fight over 5 rounds.
Gareth started the fight with a very quick pace and had some success with his boxing, but nothing to phase Dave. In round 2, Gareth started landing some heavy kicks, but Dave responded with unrelenting knees. This drafted out the remained of the fight with Dave attacking forward aggressively landing some great knee's and walking through Gareths weight-drained attempts at punching.
When the final bell tolled Dave danced around the ring victorious, and Gareth limped his way back to his corner. Some how..... whether through bias, mis-education or just poor judging Gareth was given the decision. This unfortunately gave Dave his first loss on his record, but all the other respective coaches and asteamed people involved with the sport, acknowledged Daves win; So we had to accept the decision and move on despite consultation with the judges. The judges (Anne Quinlan, Ian Fance and Scott Ashton) were unable to justify their decision and could not qualify/quantify the reasoning behind this. Mai pen rai.......
On the 14th June Richard Cadden challenges for his 3rd World Title against Rungnakorn Kharnpan of Thailand. Richard and Rung have fought twice previously, with both taking one win each, so this bout brings a lot of speculation to a head. Rung beat Richard on points the first time at Leeds Town Hall back in 2006, with Richard taking victory in the rematch in the first round at Power Of Scotland 2. For this third bout in the trilogy, Rung is putting his ISKA World Title on the line. It promises to be an exciting bout.
Also on the bill Liam Harrison and Andy Howson, two of Richards stable mates at Bad Company Gym, will be defending their WMC Titles (Liam for his 61kg World Title, and Andy his 55kgs Intercontinental belt). James France wil be fighting a top french opponent. There is also a full 12-fight undercard.
The show starts at 6pm, doors open at 5pm. Stalls tickets are £23, tierred tickets are £28 and ringside tickets are £35. If anyone wants any tickets contact Richard on 07734 580 259 (ring or text)
On April 19th Richard Cadden went to Dublin to fight Rob Doyle for the IKF European Light welterweight Title (64.5kgs). Rob was coming off a record of 18f 14w 12ko's and was a dangerous challenge for Richard. The bout was all action from the first bell with Rob coming out strong. Richard weathered the storm, and came back well in the second and third to drop Rob 3 times in the round with clinical boxing. This was great win for Richard, after a couple of tough losses last year and is glad to quieten his critics. Well done Richard. On the 26th April, Danny Giblin fought Dennison Southerland for the Cage Warrior Contenders World Title, matched at 93kgs. Danny came in well-within the weight limit and had an up-hill struggle against a physically bigger opponent. Danny scored well in the first round with his striking, landing some clean boxing, a head kick and a solid knee, but Dennison was a tough durable opponent. In the second round Dennison was able to gain a good position in mount and unleash a fast attack to take a TKO win by "ground and pound". Well done to Danny on a gritty performance.
Further to this bout Danny has decided that this is not his best fighting weight and is looking to take his next match at a catch-weight of 88-90kgs on the next Quannum Show in Huddersfield. Watch this space for details.
